Assess Job Fit When You Select Employees

Assess Job Fit When You Select EmployeesAssess Job Fit When You Select EmployeesLooking for information about job fit? Its a significant factor in whether employees thrive in their jobs. Without the right job fit, an employee will never experience as much happiness and success as he deserves at work. Hell never achieve his true potential. Employers need to be as concerned about job fit as cultural fit. Otherwise, you will never utilize the potential contributions of your current and future employees. Heres more about why. Job fit is a concept that explains whether the intersection between an employees strengths, needs and experience, and the requirements of a particular job and work environment- match- or not. When the two interests match, an employee and your organization experience a good job fit. Employers pay attention to the skills and experience that a potential employee brings to the vorstellungsgesprch table. Fewer employers actively assess whether the candidate will fit well into the culture of the organization. Even fewer look at the total picture and assess the candidates job fit. How to Think about Job Fit behauptung are some of the factors that need consideration when an employer assess a candidates potential job fit. Cultural fit Will the applicant work well in the organizations culture. Does the organizations culture match what the individual needs to be successful in a particular work environment?Experience Does the candidate have the work and life experience necessary to excel in the job?Values, beliefs, outlook To succeed in a job, an individual must share the prevailing values, of his colleagues and customers. Employees who fail to fit within the environment generally leave to find a work environment or culture which is more congruent with their own values and beliefs. Needs the employee fulfills by working Every person has reasons for working that include the desire for a paycheck, but each individual has other needs that work satisfies- or should. These include such factors as notoriety, recognition, leadership, collegiality, and challenge. For significant job fit, the job must fulfill a significant number of the employees needs.Job content The work that the employee does every day is also a significant factor in job fit. Does the employee get to do the things that she loves to do? Does the job utilize her strengths? Does the work fulfill her needs and allow her to live a job that is congruent with her values? Job content is important in identifying job fit. Education and Training Does your candidate have the right education and training for the job? Or, can you provide it? or can she obtain it in a timely manner? Dedicating a full-time resource to training a new employee is rarely a practical alternative if you can locate a qualified employee with the appropriate training. There are other components that indicate job fit, but these cover most bases. Job Fit in Employee Selection In a masterful work, First, Br eak All The Rules What the Worlds Greatest Managers Do Differently, authors Marcus Buckingham and Curt Coffman recommend that in hiring, employers should hire the best talent that they can find. In an analogy used throughout the book, they recommend that, when you have the right people on the bus, you can then begin to worry about what seat to put them in (job fit). You can also use job fit assessments and testing, behavioral interviews, and significant, thorough background checking to determine beforehand if the applicant you like will fit the current job you have available. This should not deter you from hiring the best talent that you can find because you have additional options for potential star employees you can create a different job, for example. These interview questions and this advice about how to interpret interview question answersshould assist you to identify people who fit the job. Employees who experience job fit are productive, happy, contributing employees. If you h ave an employee who is job searching or expressing unhappiness in his current role, starts by examining job fit. You may find you have a potential A-player assigned to the wrong seat on the bus. Replacing that potential A-player takes a whole lot of time and money versus changing his seat on the bus- which you can readily do.

Protecting a New World of 3D-Printed Products

Protecting a New World of 3D-Printed Products Protecting a New World of 3D-Printed Products Protecting a New World of 3D-Printed ProductsThe number of 3D-printed, critical components grows each day. They make their way into vehicles, aircraft, medical devices, prostheses, human bodies, and military applications. With that increase comes more opportunities for bad actors to hack the additive manufacturing industry, potentially jeopardizing the products meant to improve our health and safety. So far, no major hacks have been reported in the emerging industry, says Raheem Beyah, a professor at Georgia Institute of Technologys School of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He wants to keep it that way.Anyone that will rely on additive manufacturing for mission-critical projects should be concerned, Beyah says. Corporate saboteurs, land states, and disgruntled employees are just a few of the groups he says will target AM and the products it generates.Georgia Tech researchers Raheem Beyah ( left) and David Formby (right) are developing methods to secure data in the control ordnungsprinzips used to operate industrial facilities. Image Christopher Moore / Georgia TechTo ease those concerns, Beyah and a team of researchers from Georgia Tech and Rutgers University have developed a three-layer system designed to verify that 3D printed objects have not been compromised. It uses acoustic measurements, printer component tracking, and detectable nanorods to protect the integrity of printed products. The system works independently of corporate computer networks, removing one of the major gateways to cybercrime. We have plenty of cyber protections, but it will take a new kind of security to protect the physical side. Its a new day.Prof. Raheem Beyah, Georgia TechWe have plenty of cyber protections, but it will take a new kind of security to protect the physical side, says Beyah, who has a deep background in cybersecurity. Its a new day. Its going to be critical to make sure everyt hing is secure.Hes not the only one who thinks so. Last summer, the National Science Foundation awarded the team a three-year, $250,000 grant to continue to improve and strengthen the system. All of the metrics captured through each segment of the security system are compared to what Beyah calls the golden copy, which includes a properly printed finished product and the documentation of the printers key performance metrics during the production process. The researchers tested their security system using different types of 3D printers and a computer numerical control machine while manufacturing a polyethylene tibial knee prosthesis. They then compared different stages of the printing processes to the golden copy. We got close to one hudred percent accuracy on the tests, Beyah says. The systems three components include an acoustic monitor made up of inexpensive microphones located above and/or around the printer and filtering software that detect changes in the usual sound a printer mak es. The software, he says, works in much the same way as the Shazam and SoundHound apps that can accurately identify millions of different songs through the microphone of a smartphone. The basic thesis is that you have mechanical components that have to make some noise, he says. When Im printing the same exact thing, the printer should sound the exact same way when I make the next copy. The systems physical tracking piece uses linear potentiometers and gyroscopic sensors placed on the extruders to make sure they follow the same path when printing the same objects. To detect variations or flaws in the final product, the researchers placed gold nanorods into the filament material used in the printer. They used Raman spectroscopy and computed tomography to detect the drehort of the nanorods in the final product. I know beforehand where Im going to place them, Beyah says, adding that the nanorods dont affect the integrity of the material. Think of it as a 3D watermark.Beyah is using the gr ant, in part, to improve the accuracy of the systems sensors and the microphones, especially when it comes to isolating and focusing on the noise one printer makes from the others around it. The researchers are experimenting with different camera arrays that can be used to monitor stages of the printing process in real time.Beyah says the system is proof-of-concept but feels it could be ready for market in about a year. A major selling point, he says, is that it doesnt have to operate on a connected network.Considering the possible vulnerabilities that exist in each stage of the 3D printing process creating the product design on a computer, pushing the design package over the network to the printer, downloading printer firmware Beyah believes extra layers of protection cant come fast enough to the AM industry.Think about the entire 3D-printing ecosystem and all of its different stages the software, the STL file, the OS, the firmware can be compromised. The networks intrusion detec tion system can be bypassed, he says. We need something in plus-rechnen to protect the system. For Further Discussion

Sample Music Business Internship Resume

Sample Music Business Internship Resume Sample Music Business Internship Resume Most employers of college graduates in the music business look for hires who have some experience in the field, so it makes sense to secure an internship while in school or right after graduation. Creating an  effective resume that showcases relevant skills and knowledge  will be a critical step in landing a solid internship.   Before starting to compose your resume, take an inventory of your skills and experiences  from  all aspects of your background,  including academic projects, campus and community activities, jobs, internships, and independent pursuits. If you haven’t been active in the field, volunteer to help on campus with organizations like the radio station, campus concert and entertainment committees,  or  the  music department. Consider  managing student bands, assisting in the campus recording studio, or covering the music scene for the campus newspaper. Emphasize social media marketing functions  in  these  roles  whenever possible, given how highly these skills are valued in the music industry. Consider creating a music-related blog and marketing it to all your friends. For each description on your resume,  start your phrase with  a skill or action term.  In  the music industry, the  following  are  common skill terms:  promoted, organized, created, marketed, publicized, composed, orchestrated, managed, devised, pitched, negotiated, presented, planned, fund-raised, arranged, facilitated, and conducted. Be sure to reference any situations where you were able to influence others to action,  such as attracting an audience for an event, generating donations for a cause, recruiting volunteers to help with a project or  to  join a fraternity or sorority, selling a product or tickets, or attracting a following for an online media site. Whenever possible,  show your achievements with numbers. For example: Sold 200 tickets for  a  coffee house concert.Recruited 15 new members for  a  fraternity.Increased advertising sales by 15%. Include a  skills section on your resume  to highlight your technical skills in musical recording or performance, social media, marketing, and computers. 5 Ways to Survive Attending a Conference Alone

5 Ways to Survive Attending a Conference Alone 5 Ways to Survive Attending a Conference Alone Attending conferences can be a great opportunity to learn a lot and meet people in your industry, but attending alone can be a frightening undertaking- especially if you’re an introvert like me.Last year, I faced that fear when I attended Blogalicious, a conference created for women bloggers to share their experiences and network. I knew it would be difficult terrain for me, but I also knew that if I let myself be nervous and withdrawn the whole time, I’d just wade through the days without connecting with people or meeting anyone I wanted to.So, I put on my big girl boots, mentally prepped myself, and got on with it. And I had a great time. If you’re like me, attending a conference for the first time, or attending a conference alone, let me share what I learned about not just surviving the experience, but making it an awesome one.1. I'm Not Kidding About the BootsWhen I say put on your big girl boots, I mean it. Ever notice that there’s something kind of incredible about a gr eat pair of boots that makes you feel like you’re walking on top of the world? My point, though, is not that you have to run out and buy some new boots for the conference (though that would be quite fun!). The point is to bring at least one item of clothing (or, in my case, four pairs of boots) that makes you feel strong, confident, and self-assured.Although it’s a seemingly little thing, dressing the part can help you start with your best foot forward. No pun intended.2. Have a Home BaseMost conferences go from morning until late at night, for at least a couple of days, so you’ll want time to get away from everything. For a lot of the girls at Blogalicious, that was simply their hotel rooms. For me, it was my car. A quiet couch in the hotel that nobody else has found can work, too.Whatever and wherever it is, find somewhere you can go to freshen up, eat a quick snack, and relax for a bit- and get back to the conference feeling refreshed.3. Speak to the SpeakersEven if it’s intimidating, gather up the courage to talk to the speakers that made an impact on you. Trust me, they’re just people, and they’re there because they want to talk with attendees. Besides, it will probably be a very rewarding experience. At Blogalicious, I’m so glad that I went up to interior designer Erika Ward and spoke with her. Yes, she’s insanely popular, but she was also very friendly. And she’s been where I want to go, so she was able to offer me valuable advice that I would never have received had I quickly shuffled out of the room.4. Talk to the People Around YouYou never know who might be sitting next to you. This isn’t to say that everyone you talk to is successful and has something to offer you- in my case, most of the girls at the conference were bloggers just like me. Nonetheless, there were plenty of professionals attending as well.   And by talking to them, I not only made valuable contacts, but also many friends. And you can’t do that until you get over being too afraid to talk to people. So again, pull up those boots and say hello. Introduce yourself, ask questions, and show that you’re actually interested in their answers. Move beyond small talk, and hopefully, the conversation will be natural and bonding.5. If You’re Uncomfortable, it’s OK to LeaveOne of the best decisions I made while I was at the conference was to leave a few of the events. I mainly skipped out on some of the purely social evening events- I knew that if I were to stay out all night every night, I wouldn’t have enough energy the next day, during sessions when I really needed it.So, know your limits. It’s OK to skip an hour of sessions. If that’s what you need to get yourself together before the evening events, then that break is time well-spent. Take a walk by yourself, read a book for a half hour, or talk on the phone with a friend. The world will not pass you by. (Just make sure that you’re not doing any of those things when the HDTV is being gi ven away at the Sears Suite- then you'll be kicking yourself!)Attending a conference alone can be scary, but it doesn't have to be a negative experience. Just be prepared, and you’ll make it a great one. Now, lace up those boots and go have fun!Photo courtesy of Sebastiaan ter Burg.

Everything to Know about the Next Generation of the Abrams Tank

Everything to Know about the Next Generation of the Abrams Tank Everything to Know about the Next Generation of the Abrams Tank The U.S. Army deployed its next generation Abrams tank â€" known as the M1A3  â€" in combat in 2017.  Army  officials have said they plan to keep the latest iteration of the long-serving tank in service until 2050. Evolution of the Abrams Tank over 30 Years The first Abrams tank â€" called the M1 â€" entered service in 1980. It is named after  General  Creighton Abrams, who served as Commander of U.S. military forces in Vietnam from 1968 to 1972. Two other generations of the Abrams tank have been brought into military service over the past 30 years â€" the M1A1 and the M1A2. The Abrams tank was used by the U.S. Army in Europe during the late 1980s. The tank was first deployed in combat during the 1991 Gulf War. Nearly 2,000 M1A1 versions of the tank were stationed in Saudi Arabia as part of  Operation Desert Storm. The Abrams proved superior in combat to the Soviet-built tanks used by the Iraqi military in that war. After the 1991 Gulf War, the Abrams tank was upgraded to the M1A2 model and deployed to Bosnia and throughout the Middle East. The tank has been effective due to its firing accuracy, strong armored shell, and durability in harsh desert environments. The M1A2 version uses gas turbine engines. In its deployment it was equipped with weapons that included the M256 smoothbore gun, a 50 caliber M2HB machine gun, 7.62-millimeter M240 machine gun, and smoke grenade launchers. Despite all of its achievements, the Abrams has been criticized for its size and weight. With the M1A2 at almost 70 tons, the tank has not been easy to mobilize quickly. It has also been difficult to transport by air into foreign combat zones and is nearly incapable of crossing most bridges. The Army sought to rectify these problems with the new M1A3 version of the Abrams, which is lighter and more maneuverable than previous generations. New Features of the M1A3 Abrams Tank Congress allocated funding for further upgrades to the Abrams tank in 2014, directing roughly $120 million for investment. The newest, M1A3 Abrams is outfitted with a number of enhancements over previous versions. To make it lighter and more mobile, the Army replaced the M256 smoothbore gun with a lighter 120-millimeter cannon, added road wheels and an improved suspension system, installed a more durable track, used lighter armor, improved idle mode efficiency, and inserted precision armaments capable of hitting targets from 12 kilometers. Additionally, the tank is also outfitted with infrared cameras and laser detectors. These upgrades enhanced the Abrams tank’s design features and make the tank more effective in armored ground warfare and urban environments.  The Army  had announced plans to retire the Abrams tank and replace it with the XM1202 Mounted Combat System, a more compact and lightweight tank, but the  Department of Defense  canceled the program in April 2009 during a round of budget cuts.

4 Ways Your Resume Might Turn Employers Off

4 Ways Your Resume Might Turn Employers Off 4 Ways Your Resume Might Turn Employers Off Whether you’re new to the world of job searching or have been at it for quite some time, you probably know that your   resume  is the first thing prospective employers will use to judge your qualifications. But what you may not realize is that certain aspects of your resume could wind up turning potential hiring managers off. Here are a few to be mindful of. No longer do college graduates get hired at a specific company and stay there for life. Nowadays,   job-hopping  is so common that employers practically expect you to leave after a certain period of time. In fact, the average worker today will have 10 different jobs before turning 40, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That said, there   is  such a thing as too much job-hopping, and if your resume reflects that, it could become a red flag for potential employers. So if you’ve held down, say, eight different jobs in the past four years, you may want to avoid mentioning a few. You can get around this by listing your various stints in terms of years during which you were employed, and not referring to specific months. For example, if you worked at Company A from January 2016 through June 2016, and Company B from July 2016 through December 2016, and the former is much more relevant to your career path, you might omit your stint at Company B and simply list that you worked at Company A in 2016. Maybe you took time off during your career to raise children or go back to school. While there’s nothing wrong with that, the problem with having a   gap on your resume  is that it might raise questions with prospective employers. So rather than leave those reading your resume to wonder what you did with yourself during that period, fill in the blank. You can add a quick note on your resume indicating what that time was used for, thus eliminating the guesswork. Better yet, if you happened to do some freelance work during that period (say, you worked a few hours a week for several years while your kids were young, or while you took a year to travel), there’s no need to go into detail about that gap. Instead, list something along the lines of “freelance writer” or “freelance graphic designer” for that period of time. The folks reading your resume won’t have any way of knowing whether you worked on a full-time or part-time basis, which means you won’t have to address the gap issue at all. If you worked in a number of different industries, chances are your resume will seem a little disjointed. This especially holds true if you held positions of different levels, or had years when you seemingly went down a level from a previous position (for example, if you went from being a manager in 2013 to being somebody’s assistant in 2014). The best way to get around this is to compose a clear opening summary that tells prospective employers who you are. You might, for example, say something like “Marketing whiz with strong analytical background,” which would explain why you went from advertising assistant to hedge fund associate to in-house copywriter. There’s nothing wrong with mentioning one or two personal tidbits on your resume if they happen to play into your skill set . But focusing on your hobbies too much could send the message that you’re lacking in experience, and therefore need filler content to compensate. A better bet? Leave hobbies off your resume, or limit yourself to items that make you more marketable. For example, if you’re a volunteer firefighter, that shows that you’re able to stay cool under pressure, which is worth a mention. But your prospective employers really don’t need to know about your love of quilting. The more strategic you are with your resume, the greater your chances of it getting you in the door somewhere. So pay attention to these potential turnoffs, and take steps to address them. It could end up spelling the difference between landing an interview and losing out on an otherwise solid opportunity. Theres a Belief Gap about the Wage Gap, Part 2

There’s a Belief Gap about the Wage Gap, Part 2 There’s a Belief Gap about the Wage Gap, Part 2 Ive written a little bit here on Recruiter.com about the wage gap. After I wrote Women Are Saying Goodbye, I realized that there are many in the workforce who dont believe that a wage gap exists and if it does, many of these same people agree (quite respectfully and with some reliable reports) that it is, at least in part, due to womens own choices and inability to negotiate for more. This again came to the forefront when I read this Bloomberg editorial. If you are interested in more on this, please read Part 1, which discusses family time, child-care, education and more. This post will deal primarily with how women enter and navigate the workplace and how either workplace culture or their decisions affect their demonstrably lower wages One of the first issues raised by those who disagree that the Wage Gap is based on discriminatory practices is choice of industry. What about the fact that women dont choose jobs in higher paid industries (and/or male dominated industries). Surely if we factored that in, then you would plainly see that, the alleged wage gap is negligible: Furchtgott-Roth cites a 2005 study by economists June O’Neill and Dave O’Neill, which found that for the most part “the gender gap is attributable to choices made by women concerning the amount of time and energy to devote to a career.” They continue: “There is no gender gap in wages among men and women with similar family roles.” In addition to being more likely to seek part-time work, women are also more likely to have gaps in their employment history and to enter lower-paying fields. The consulting company Consad, in a 2009 report for the Labor Department, found that these factors account for most of the pay gap. Correct for them, and men make only 5 percent to 7 percent more than women for the same work. First, Id like to point out that 5-7% is not negligible, if you disagree, go ask your boss for a 7% raise. Unfortunately, studies show that even when women choose non-traditional, higher-paid majors, a wage gap STILL exists. Women in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) are paid 86 percent of what their male counterparts are paid. Okay FINE! The wage gap exists. But isnt because women are less likely to negotiate, choose better work-life balance over money and arent traditionally attracted to the high-risk work that men are? Mehmaybe? Lets discuss each of these in stride. The female is unable to negotiate. There are plenty of arguments to debunk this, but were focusing on discrimination or a lack thereof here, so lets zero in on that. Timothy Judge, the Franklin D. Schurz Professor of Management in Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business; Beth Livingston from Cornell University; and Charlice Hurst of the University of Western Ontario, document the effects of gender and “agreeableness” in their study, “Do Nice Guys â€" and Gals â€" Really Finish Last? The Joint Effects of Sex and Agreeableness on Income.” Cliffs Notes Version: Women are more likely to be judged very negatively when they attempt to negotiate, while men, get a proverbial boost from both men and women (please note: in one study, both sexes were played by actors reading from an identical script trying to negotiate in a work setting). On the other hand, there is this study that shows that men are more likely than women to ask for more money, better perks, more vacation etc. The solution to gender disparities, this school of thought suggests, is to train women to be more assertive and to ask for more. But this: What we found across all the studies is men were always less willing to work with a woman who had attempted to negotiate than with a woman who did not, Bowles said. They always preferred to work with a woman who stayed mum. But it made no difference to the men whether a guy had chosen to negotiate or not. So if women are asking, but either NOT getting or getting penalized (once again) for identical behavior for which their male counterparts are rewarded : If women are asking, but are still not advancing as quickly, maybe we need to frame things differently. Perhaps it’s not that women don’t ask- but that men don’t have to. The females are unable to tolerate or do not move toward high-risk/high-reward job. From the IWF’s website): Men are far more likely to take unpleasant and dangerous jobs, what Farrell calls the “death and exposure professions.” For example, firefighting, truck driving, mining and logging - to name just a few high-risk jobs - are all more than 95 percent male. Conversely, low risk jobs like secretarial work and childcare are more than 95 percent female. Yet, there is no evidence (actually there is opposite evidence) that high-risk= high-pay. In fact of the four most dangerous jobs in America, all four are on the lower end of the pay-scale. Even in cases where a danger premium exists, economists have found that everyone in the company, even those who are not in physical danger, is awarded the premium. Boom, roasted. Finally, we settle on work-life balance, arguably the most elusively defined of the three (arguments against the wage gap even existing). Work-life balance may be the ideal but its not reality for mothers or women in America. In six out of ten families, a mother is the primary or co-breadwinner, so the wage gap makes a huge difference in a family’s economic security. We do have a measurement for work-life balance for OECD countries and it has this to say regarding hours worked: Overall, men spend more hours in paid work: in the United States 15% of men work very long hours, compared with 6% for women. {On the other hand,} Men in the United States, spend 154 minutes per day cooking, cleaning or caring, higher than the OECD average of 131 minutes but still less than American women who spend 258 minutes per day on average on domestic work . The argument seems to bear weight on this one, in study after study women seem less likely to choose careers that will negatively affect their work-life balance but may be more financially rewarding. However, once again, we find that the female exceptions to the rule who DO take the road less traveled pay a higher cost than their male counterparts for doing so: In the Harvard and Beyond survey, Goldin and Katz found that female M.B.A.s took more time off after having a child than did their peers with other advanced degrees, and that even after correcting for the amount of time out of work, this group of women saw the largest pay decrease compared to peers who took no time off. Female M.B.A.s who took a year and a half off made 41 percent less than their counterparts who had worked continuously. For J.D.s who took time off, the pay gap was 29 percent. And for M.D.s, the gap (16 percent) was even less than the gap facing women with no graduate degree (25 percent). While this is the most convincing argument for discrimination being a smaller part of the pay gap, it by no means indicates that the gender gap doesnt exist. In fact, in this study, some industries are seeing the pay gap INCREASE yeah, in 2012. Be sure to continue reading for Part 3 of this series, where well discuss some of the bright spots, like Female CEO pay in the Fortune 500, how the US stacks up in global comparisons and finally what we can do to live up to the promise made over 30 years ago with the Equal Pay Act.

Pursuing a Manufacturing Career and Managing Transition ME Today January 2012

Pursuing a Manufacturing Career and Managing Transition ME Today January 2012 Pursuing a Manufacturing Career and Managing Transition ME Today January 2012 Pursuing a Manufacturing Career and Managing Transition We got the opportunity to catch up with Ritesh Lakhkar, Senior Development Engineer, Corning Incorporated (Corning, NY) at the ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress Exposition this past November working with the Committee on Early Career Development. Our conversation revealed some elements about his career in manufacturing and how he coped with continuous change in his life; moving to the Americas from India; pursing an advanced education and his diverse background working in two different manufacturing environments. ASME: Tell us about Corning and the resources dedicated to engineering and science. RL: Corning Incorporated is the world leader in specialty glass and ceramics. Drawing on 160 years of materials science and process engineering knowledge, Corning creates and makes keystone components that enable high-technology systems for consumer electronics, mobile emissions control, telecommunications and life sciences. Our products include glass substrates for LCD televisions, computer monitors and laptops; ceramic substrates and filters for mobile emission control systems; optical fiber, cable, hardware equipment for telecommunications networks; optical biosensors for drug discovery; and other advanced optics and specialty glass solutions for a number of industries including semiconductor, aerospace, defense, astronomy and metrology. Corning is also one of the leading research companies in the world. Innovation has always been core to Cornings DNA. For over 160 years, Corning has been a pioneer in taking glass to the next frontier. The list of innovations at Corning is quite long, from developing and manufacturing the glass envelopes for Edisons light bulbs to making the mirrors for the Hubble Telescope and window glass for the Space Shuttle! Cornings research and development facilities are powerhouses of innovation where hundreds of highly talented scientists and engineers take on endeavors to invent the next big technologies. Scientists and engineers at Corning specialize in a variety of areas such as chemistry, physics, biology, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and manufacturing process development. At Corning you can find people from diverse educational, cultural and ethnic backgrounds. This diversity of its people is a real strength of the company. Working with project teams is a very fulfilling experience at Corning. Corning is a very people-focused company that values its employees and their talents and provides them diverse opportunities for personal and professional development. ASME: Prior to Corning you worked a great number of years for Caterpillar -would you share some insights about the company and your role? RL: I was a manufacturing research and development engineer for almost five years at Caterpillar, Inc. For Caterpillar, the name says it all it is the worlds largest manufacturer of heavy earth-moving equipment. Some of the main products that Caterpillar manufactures are track-type tractors, mining trucks, hydraulic excavators, building construction products, natural gas turbines, drag lines, locomotives, large and marine engines and industrial power generators. Caterpillar presented me a very rich learning experience. The biggest benefit was the diversity of projects I worked on. I am not sure if there is any other company in the world where a person is able to work on everything from a small-building construction skid-steer loader to the largest mining truck; from fuel systems to engines and even locomotives. During my career at Caterpillar, I had several excellent opportunities to work in the areas of welding, sheet-metal cutting, deburring, edge finishing, machining, robotics, process simulations, laser-based and specialized manufacturing processes, quality auditing and, to a certain extent, paint technologies and logistics. With Caterpillar I also got to see the world. My projects took me to Caterpillars various manufacturing facilities in Asia, Europe and the Americas. Working with people from various cultural backgrounds was a rich experience for personal growth. Caterpillar, Inc. is a great company that offers excellent career opportunities. It has the potential to provide a very fulfilling manufacturing-related experience to any mechanical engineer who aspires to work in the manufacturing sector. ASME: What led you down your selected career path? RL: I did most of my schooling at various places in India. The Indian education system allows one to learn physics, chemistry, math and biology continuously for five years and sets a perfect stage for a student to choose a career in engineering or medical sciences or a combination of those. After securing a rank among the top 20 students in the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) Maharashtra State (India) Public exam, I had an opportunity to choose between one of the best engineering colleges and the best medical schools in the state of Maharashtra. I had always known that I would do well in either field, but I was more inclined to learn more about machinery, airplanes, cell phones and computers and, hence, decided to choose engineering as my career. Although at the beginning I struggled with the lack of precision nomenclature for objects and features in engineering that exists in the fields of biology and medicine, it has been a gre at experience that has allowed me to gain multiple skills and learn about exciting technologies. I have come to an understanding that there is engineering behind everything including medical sciences. I completed a bachelors degree in mechanical engineering from Government College of Engineering, Pune (CoEP). Established in 1854, CoEP provides a great learning experience to its students by bringing old and modern engineering together. The inside-out tour to understand how a Babcock Wilcox Boiler, built during the British Empire days of India, functions was noteworthy. Even though some applied chemistry experiments resulted in disasters, they were well compensated by nicely chiseled artifacts from production engineering workshops, which reinforced my choice of mechanical engineering for a career. ASME: After earning your mechanical engineering BS degree in India; how did you end up deciding to come to the U.S. to purse a graduate degree and work for Caterpillar? RL: During my co-op time at Tata Motors, Ltd., and final year of bachelors studies in mechanical engineering, I started thinking about the next steps. I was interested in pursuing higher education. I explored various avenues of higher education in countries like Australia, Canada, the UK, Germany and the United States. I was specifically looking for programs that would allow me to gain industry experience through internships. With limited resources to gather information at that time, I was able to narrow my choices to a few U.S. universities. I applied to those schools for a masters program in the area of manufacturing. My effort paid off and I was accepted into the School of Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana. ASME: How did you cope with transitioning from one culture to another, one company to another? RL: Coming to the U.S. from India came with cultural changes. Purdues Indian Students Association, my friends and co-workers made my transition to the American culture easy. The book, Inscrutable Americans by Anurag Mathur helped me understand and imagine how it would be in the U.S. before I came to here. In addition, CNN and BBC were always there as two best friends feeding me information from all around the world with their unique English accents. At Purdue, I studied in the area of laser-based manufacturing, specifically the hardening of steel. My advisor, Dr. Y. C. Shin, helped me build a strong foundation in engineering. I am thankful to him for his guidance during and beyond my time at Purdue. My work at Purdue landed me an internship and eventually a full-time job at Caterpillar, Inc.s Technical Center in Mossville, Illinois. To fund my higher education, I had to look for opportunities on the Purdue campus. Thanks to one of my friends who had told me about a service organization at Purdue called Tactile Access to Visually Impaired Students (TAEVIS), I was able to secure a graduate assistantship position. It was a challenging job where I had to learn North American Braille to transcribe engineering and foreign language textbooks into Braille for visually-impaired students at Purdue. Very soon I was also asked to participate in tactile graphics illustration assignments. It was certainly a diversion from a traditional engineering path, but my desire to learn something new, attention to detail and knowledge of foreign languages helped me excel in this position, which paid for my advanced degree. Since my childhood, change has been an integral part of my life. Because of my fathers profession, we moved every couple of years. It would always be a new beginning in a new place. So, whether it was a change like moving from India to the U.S., or changing jobs transcribing Braille at Purdue to the world of metals manufacturing at Caterpillar, Inc., or research and development in glass manufacturing at Corning, I have learned to handle change because I grew up with it. Another thing to remember is that when a change occurs, the person is still the same person. He or she still has a certain set of skills that can be carried over. What matters is how you embrace that change and adapt yourself to the new surroundings. ASME: What does your role entail at Corning? RL: I am working as senior development engineer in display glass development at Corning. Most of my projects are related to development work for display glass such as LCD glass. Learning about glass manufacturing has brought a remarkable change in my understanding of glass. Common objects made of glass, which we almost take for granted, have a long history of innovation behind them. My opinion about glass totally changed when I learned that there are different types of glasses (chemical composition-wise) and how the strength and quality of each glass can be modified by changing the chemical composition. It was like a door had been opened to a new world of possibilities. When I started my job at Corning, the challenging part was to learn about glass manufacturing. I talked with my co-workers from my immediate group as well as other supporting groups to understand the manufacturing process. Corning helped me a lot by providing all the required resources and training to complete my on-boarding process and build my understanding of glass manufacturing. If I did not understand something or had questions about any process, I was encouraged to ask my co-workers for answers. My ability to learn new skills and apply them quickly certainly helped me to start working on multiple projects at Corning. During undergraduate years, I used to read Mechanical Engineering magazine published by ASME. The magazine talked about exciting technologies in various areas, power generation, MEMS, nanotechnology, 3D printing, manufacturing processes, robotics, information technology, and many other subjects. Through ME magazine, I learned that mechanical engineering is a very broad field and it touches many branches of engineering. My expectation from the field of mechanical engineering was that it should provide me opportunities to work in various sectors and help me to embrace the diversity of this field. Fortunately, I can say that this expectation has been fulfilled by all the organizations I have worked for. After stepping into industry, I also learned that in order to accomplish goals, focus is needed not only on technology but also on the people and teams. Engineering projects turn into a reality by teamwork and encouragement. People make the engineering progress possible. ASME: What has been the most interesting thing you have learned about manufacturing and one achievement that you are most proud of? RL: Manufacturing touches every aspect of humanity. Whether it is medical devices, spaceships, food, oil, diapers or pharmaceuticals, manufacturing is an integral part of both the development and mass production stages. Each engineering project that I have worked on has been linked to a human factor in one way or the other; whether it was transcribing Braille at Purdue, working on tractors that build a nations highways or making glass for TVs. Although I could mention a number of accomplishments, I am most proud of my work in Braille transcription at Purdue it helped blind students read their textbooks, research work in laser hardening and it has become a foundation for generations of graduate students. ASME: Youve worked in two different manufacturing environments one focused on Design and Welding and the other focused on Fundamental Research - Can you talk about the differences between the two environments and philosophies? RL: Every company has its unique attributes. I consider myself privileged to have had opportunities to work for a manufacturing/design focused organization and a fundamental research based organization. At Caterpillar, my work was focused on helping Caterpillars manufacturing facilities with their manufacturing processes. It meant working with engineering and manufacturing personnel as well as shop floor workers. Work was more geared to getting quality products out of the door as fast as possible. Sometimes I wore the hat of a quality auditor to see if all the processes were done correctly at the facilities. I also determined best practices, wrote standards and pushed for newer technologies that would help manufacturing in the production facilities. Caterpillars 6 Sigma methodology and tools helped me a lot in working on my projects. At Corning, the focus is on the fundamental understanding of any given process whether it is a development or improvement project. Cornings very structured approach for innovation and project management makes it easier to deal with the complexities of development activities or fundamental research. As a part of the development organization, it is imperative to dig down to the basics of science to make an idea work. Corning has suitable tools to help its employees to follow this path. To switch from a production- oriented organization to a fundamental-development based organization, one certainly needs patience to understand basics and, at times, to re-visit college textbooks. ASME: When it comes to sustainable environmental/ energy-saving concepts whats trending in your industry? trending RL: Todays manufacturing sector is moving to greener manufacturing; making processes more efficient, and sustainable. Universities and companies have collaborated on several occasions to develop sustainable energy-saving manufacturing processes. I have had opportunities to work on several projects such as: using environmental-friendly coolants for metal machining; saving compressed air in plants; using alternate energy resources for machining; recycling waste products from the manufacturing processes; using environmental-friendly paint technologies and washing systems. ASME: What are some hidden expectations that engineering students should expect when going into manufacturing and/or engineering profession? RL: Adaptability and a quick response to the changing demands of the profession are important. Based on my personal experience, eagerness to learn, patience, awareness of trends and appreciation of co-workers will go miles to help your career. Companies expect early-career engineers to have certain basic engineering skills and some organizations provide training in people skills and project management. The first few years after college are learning years to understand how industry functions. Early-career engineers should grab all the opportunities that are presented to them, ask questions to solve problems, develop ideas, and interact with co-workers. Building a strong technical foundation and understanding of ones profession in the early years is absolutely essential to chart a career path.
